I’m having issues loading video links… hopefully I will get it figured out again. Until then.. please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=840NbiFF1zM and listen to Kina Grannis’ song called Valentine. I just *heart* it. Kina was kind enough to give me permission to use this song in my jukebox (Wildlife Gallery}. It speaks to me : ) Thanks Kina!!

Nutcracker Painting

I’d like to give a shout out to my friend Brenda for allowing me to paint her beautiful image. I asked if she had any Ballerina’s I could paint and she offered up a few, and I’m SO thankful for her generosity {… and not just for the painting but for being the caring, loving woman that she is!} I hope you like it Brenda!! You should be receiving a link for the download of the full file. I found that I still have a few kinks to work out with the new install and getting all my things the way I like them. The music I listened to while painting this one was again……. David Nail. I just *heart* that song called Mississippi.

Fashion Show Prom 2010 {Grand Island High School}
Posted on February 12, 2010
I had the chance to attend a Fashion Show for Prom Wear up at the local high school last night. It was fun to watch them all having a good time and showing off the event attire. I am working with a few new programs (some are just upgrades) and trying to find my way around and learn the new additions.. so I played a bit with these. I’m sorry to anyone that was in the show but is not featured here. I didn’t manage to get a shot of everyone that I could use.

Crystal Bowersox
Posted on February 10, 2010
So I have to admit that I’m an American Idol follower. I won’t say “fan” because I don’t always agree with the format or whatever but every year there always seems to be one or two or maybe even three people auditioning that literally give me goosebumps when they sing. So far this year {and I hate that Idol HAS NOT shown the good ones and just crammed all the garbage auditions in our faces this season} there has only been one person to create those now infamous goosies….. Crystal Bowersox. Since we haven’t “seen” the best of the best yet… it’s a bit early to go out on a limb and claim her as my top pick out of everyone. That being said …….. SHE ROCKS! If you haven’t heard her yet, go have a listen. Didi Benami isn’t half bad either but a bit too Taylor Swift-ish. Need to hear more from her.
Thoroughly Modern Millie {Grand Island High School 2010}
Posted on February 7, 2010
Just want to say CONGRATS to all of those involved with the Grand Island High School Musical…. ”Thoroughly Modern Millie” this year. I am NOT one for plays and musicals and was COMPLETELY impressed with this performance. My husband and I surprisingly quite enjoyed the night. The cast and crew put on a FANTABULOUS show. Here are a few images from closing night. I apologize to anyone not featured here, I wasn’t able to get a ton of images, but tried to get a good variety. Thanks for a great night of fun and laughter!

Ever hear a song that made you happy but you couldn’t exactly put your finger on the reason why? Today I heard a song called “Mississippi” by David Nail which I listened to over and over while working this painting. I love this song, the music soothes my soul. I love it when good things come from the unexpected!

Greetings!
Posted on December 17, 2009
I think this will be the last one… maybe. I did not follow a tutorial this time. It’s always amazing to me how much I learn when trying to create different effects. If I can give anyone the most important tip when working in photoshop… it’s to SAVE and SAVE OFTEN, sometimes save using a new file name by adding an “a” or “b” to it. That little trick has saved me numorous times from distasterous experimental mistakes!

Tis The Season
Posted on December 14, 2009
Worked up another greeting which was also from a tutorial on the net. Just google bing for Christmas themed tutorials and I’m sure you’ll see it. I didn’t bookmark it, but I’ve seen it several times when searching. Some of the tutorials aren’t that easy simply due to the creators translation into english. Some things don’t make sense so you sort of have to figure things as you go. Kind of bums me out when something doesn’t go as they describe. BUT.. I am thankful that some has the patience to make tutorials as I have none and can’t imagine trying to walk someone through a project.

Holiday Greetings!
Posted on December 13, 2009
I was on a tutorial kick this weekend and searched out Christmas themed tuts. I found a few that I liked and then I did some combining and tweaking and came up with this one. It was a lot of fun… I learned how to stroke the path of the pen tool with a brush… way cool! {I know, I know, but it IS the simple things in life that make me happy!} This is the only one I’ll post though, the others were pretty basic.

I took these shots from my seat. I didn’t want to be annoying and get in everyone’s way so I didn’t move around. Miss M was the 8 of Hearts {Octave}. Posted on October 14, 2009
Someone asked me why I used a “real” camera in the last art piece I worked up. What you see is NOT a “real” camera, it was created from scratch using the pen tool in photoshop. Here are three progressive shots of the camera area from start to finished product. (Pen tool lines, color blocking/texture added, and finished) Hopefully I can get these to post the way I want them to appear. There was a LOT of detail and time that went into that part of the piece and I’m pretty happy with it the outcome.

Work in progress (UPDATED)
Posted on October 8, 2009
I started this one yesterday and it’s not finished. I like how it looks at this stage and I almost want to leave it as is but something is telling me to keep going. I truly love the simplicity at this stage, however, my over the top post processing self tells me it’s not done. Help me decide……. what say you?
-K
I took into account a few suggestions and made changes. See if you can figure out what they were. After the changes I decided to leave this alone for now. Sometimes going back later yields better results, and sometimes… as someone once said, less is more. Thanks for all of your input! (The first image is the updated one)

I’ve been sick the last two days with the flu and haven’t felt like doing much of anything. I had a few projects open on my pc that I kept coming back and fiddling with every now and then since yesterday and just couldn’t seem to get anything right. I finally finished up one character I was working on, hoping I can use this one in the future. Completely created in CS3. I’m going to be creative and call her “Miss Emily”. LOL.. yeah, it’s the flu talking.

Smoke Photography
Posted on September 17, 2009
There was a thread I read recently that had some examples of smoke photography. Of course you KNOW I had to give it a try. I have to say… for me… this was NOT easy. I’ll rephrase that and say capturing the smoke in focus was NOT easy. No way would autofocus yield any usable shots. My eyes are not the best, manually focusing on thin plumes of smoke in a semi-darkened room was nearly impossible. I also had some issues with my onboard flash. Once I figured out it needed to be set to manual and not TTL things were looking MUCH better instantly. I couldn’t figure out why the images looked “almost” right on my lcd but when I pulled them into bridge… the smoke was not lit up the way I wanted it. A little ginning around, added some homemade “barn doors” to my strobe light, pulled out a reflector for the opposite side of the strobe, adjusted the onboard flash… set my camera settings accordingly and VOILA!! The post processing is the best part of this, and right up my alley! I’ll be experimenting over the next few weeks I think. Triple LOVED doing this.

I’m calling this one “The Dance”

11×14 Storyboard Share {Holds 8 Images}
Posted on September 14, 2009
This Storyboard holds 8 images and is a little more complicated than the first one I posted. It comes with instructions as an Inforamtional Text Layer and you will need to make invisible before saving your project at the end. If using for web you will need to resize it accordingly. I’m hoping the instructions are easy enough to follow. Created as a psd in CS3. I do not know what other versions it is compatible with. I guess if you can use layers, it should work? Not sure though.

8×10 Storyboard Share {Holds 4 images}
Posted on September 14, 2009
Yesterday I went look for some Blog photo templates and found a few. I decided to try making one of my own and keep it as simple as possible. Made in CS3. This template is an 8×10 4 image design. It is full size and can be used for printing. If you are using it for blogging or the web in general, you will need to resize it accordingly. Please remember to make the text info layer invisible before flattening and saving your project. All you have to do is crop your images using the crop tool to the given dimensions for the image place holders (the sizes are right on the template for you) and then drag and drop them to the appropriate area. It’s not the “best” template, but it’s generic and easy to use. Hope someone can use it! I think this download is only good for 7 days. Below is a sample of the Template up for share.

Now this painting… was for me. It’s totally my colors! I had no idea I would enjoy painting flowers, I’m not really a “flower” person. I learned a few new things in Painter… like controlling Artists Oils. I think I need to redo my stylus settings, I’m not getting the pressure sensitivity that I would like. I hate messing with settings, that always scares me!

A Beautiful Mess
Posted on September 6, 2009
Needed to busy my mind and I promised myself to learn something new in photoshop every week. So this week I decided to tackle “Layer Masks”. While I don’t think I have it completely mastered {seems there are some pretty cool ways to use those} I do feel I have a better understanding. This example is pretty close to the tutorial I followed, however that tutorial must have been missing a few steps because it did NOT work the way they suggested it should. In the end…….. this is what I have.

A Blended Composition
Posted on August 30, 2009
I created this blend from a few stock images. I was incredibly bored today and decided to learn something new in photoshop. Today I learned how to use the pen tool more effectively. I think I will try to learn at least one new thing in photoshop every week. Sometimes it’s the little things that turn out to make the biggest difference in a composition. On my monitor it isn’t quite as dark as it is in other places I’ve posted it. Hope it shows up ok here.

Feeling inspired
Posted on August 22, 2009
Today while driving to Office Depot to pick up a few supplies I couldn’t help but notice how incredibly big and buffy the clouds were. There were bright white ones and various shades of gray ones.. and some stormy ones looming. The vastness and variations just made me feel so happy inside. Really, I wish I knew why they have such an effect on my soul. When I made it home after a few more stops, I felt the need to create “something”. I didn’t know what. I just knew I had to create. I know this is probably pretty basic to many graphic artists out there, but hey… everyone has to start somewhere. I’d also like to thanks Sweet Suzi Smith for singing in my headphones while I played.

Dark Continent
Posted on July 28, 2009
My brother asked me to come up with a piece to hang on his bedroom wall. He was looking for a dark continent feel with “warm and cozy” colors. I learned today that it’s not in me to create warm and cozy. I’m totally drawn to rich saturation of color, I should know better than to fight it. In any case, here is what I ended up with. Sorry Bob, I couldn’t help myself!

Allegany Nature Pilgrimage 2009
Posted on May 31, 2009
Spent the weekend at Allegany State Park and one of the days we joined a few of the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage activities. There was a bird banding session where they set up mist nets to capture birds in the area and band them if they weren’t already banded, and record various data. DH liked photographing the birds while they were being held and banded. I liked staying down by the nets and trying to capture the birds in the trees before they hit the nets. I didn’t get as many photos as I would have liked but it’s sort of like the luck of the draw down by the nets. These Cedar Waxwings happen to be my most favorite bird and they were in a group. I’m told the ones with the black patches under the chins are the males. I was hoping for an Eastern Bluebird but I’m sure it was too brushy for their liking. Hope to get back out for a day of photographing birds again soon. I also have some bird of prey images to post from a presentation they had, but they are of course, being held by the handler. I prefer to get them in the wild but I take what I can get!
Thanks for stopping in!
